ControllerWindshield · Where are we right now?
Are we measuring what we need to make better decisions?
Start with cash. Then add the few numbers that tell you, every week, whether the business is getting stronger or weaker.
Most owners have more data than they use and fewer measures than they need. The goal isn’t a big dashboard. It’s five or six numbers, each owned by someone, reviewed on a rhythm.
An approach
- Start with cash. Cash today across every account, and a rolling 13-week forecast of what’s coming in and going out.
- Add the numbers that lead. Two or three that move before revenue does: sales pipeline, bookings, utilization, average order size.
- Add the numbers that confirm. Gross margin and net profit, from the monthly close.
- Give each one an owner and a target. Someone is responsible for each number and knows what good looks like.
- Review them every week. Same day, same order. Ask what changed and what you’ll do about it.
You can answer it when
- You can see cash today and 13 weeks ahead.
- Five or six numbers, each with an owner and a target, reviewed every week.
