ControllerWindshield · Where are we right now?

How do we compare to other businesses like us?

Your numbers mean more beside your peers. Benchmarks show where you lead and where there’s room.

A 12% margin can be excellent in one industry and a warning sign in another. Comparing against businesses like yours turns a number into a judgment.

An approach

  1. Pick four or five ratios that matter for your industry. Gross margin, net margin, labor as a percent of revenue, overhead as a percent of revenue, revenue per employee.
  2. Find a fair comparison. Industry association surveys, your bank, a peer group, or published benchmarks for businesses your size.
  3. Compare like with like. Same revenue range, same business model.
  4. Ask why before acting. Circle the one or two biggest gaps and understand them before changing anything.

You can answer it when

  • You know where your margins and overhead sit against businesses like yours.
